SH25 Bridge

PROJECT: SH25a Bridge Construction

CLIENT: Preco

LOCATION: Coromandel Peninsula

DELIVERABLE: Roadside Concrete Barrier Moulds

COMPLETION DATE: Dec 2023

BACKGROUND:

In March 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle caused a massive slip along State Highway 25A (SH25A) on the Coromandel Peninsula - a vital transportation link between the east and west sides of the peninsula. Waka Kotahi assessed the situation and determined that constructing a bridge was the quickest and most resilient solution to restore the highway connection. Construction on the bridge began in June 2023, with an estimated completion date of early 2024.

CHALLENGE:

As SH25A was a lifeline for communities on both sides of the peninsula, it was crucial that the bridge construction be completed within extremely tight deadlines – minimising the impact on residents, businesses, and the local economy.

OUTCOME:

To achieve this outcome, one key strategy was to design and manufacture bridge components offsite, speeding up the construction process and minimising on-site disruptions. The approach required precise planning and execution, as well as effective communication between the design team, manufacturers, and on-site construction crew.

Kings Engineering provided one piece of this puzzle, working alongside Preco, the primary precast concrete supplier for this project. Under intense time pressure, Kings Engineering designed and manufactured the steel moulds for the bridge's barrier components.

Kings Engineering's experience in creating highly accurate and durable steel moulds was invaluable in ensuring that the precast concrete barriers met the project's stringent quality standards and could be produced efficiently. The Kings team of engineers and fabricators worked tirelessly to design and manufacture the steel moulds, putting in extra hours to ensure that the moulds were delivered to Preco on time.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

"I've built a close working relationship with Steve over a long period of time. It's a relationship based on delivery, expertise and trust. In simple terms, he knows how to get the job done to specification and within the required timeframes, with the minimum of hassle. The SH25A bridge construction project was the perfect example of Steve and his crew producing the goods while working to the very tightest of deadlines."
